Passing through security today, I registered in the daily visitor's log. A friendly security guard asked where I was from, and whether I traveled for my job. I replied that I have young kids so I stay local. He said that he didn't have kids yet. Plenty of time for that, said I.
The guard said that his uncle found out that he had a child when she was five years old. The child was the result of out of town, casual sex, and the mother didn't or couldn't find his uncle to share the news. His uncle learned he was a father when he ran into his ex-lover on the street five years later.
The guard went on to tell me that he didn't believe in casual sex, especially since his brother died of AIDS. The guard hasn't had relations in five "somethings" (he mumbled, so I don't know if he said weeks, months, or years.) Getting together just to fulfill a need doesn't appeal to him; too many risks and it's not as special that way.
He's hoping for the right woman, so the relations will mean more. Didn't I agree? I'm married, right? Doesn't it mean more when you care for the other person and have a relationship?
Believe him, he gets offers. Just the other day a woman said that she used to have a crush, but now she's married. Why didn't she tell him back then, darn it!?? Oh well; Cupid will get him one of these days. Have a great day!
This exchange lasted all of four minutes, yet I now know more about his (and his uncle's) sex life than I do about some of my closest friends'. He wasn't flirtatious at all, just sociable, earnest and talkative. It was a remarkably cordial -- yet odd -- exchange.
I smiled as I walked away, pleased, stunned, and both sorry and glad that this is my last day in this building. God knows what I'd learn tomorrow.

It's amazing what some people will share with strangers.
